I’m going to say the quiet part out loud: a lot of AI content “strategy” right now is just volume cosplay.

More landing pages.
More synthetic sludge wearing a blazer.
The problem is that the market is getting better at smelling it.

It’s fine, they will get to love my stuff.
According to Gartner’s new survey on consumer reactions to GenAI brand content, 50% of U.S. consumers say they’d prefer to do business with brands that do not use GenAI in consumer-facing messages, ads, and content. Gartner also found that 61% frequently question whether the information they rely on is trustworthy, while 68% frequently wonder whether the content they see is even real.
That is not a copywriting problem.
That is a trust problem.

This changes the GTM math
For the last year, the lazy playbook was obvious: use AI to lower content costs, flood channels, and call it efficiency.
I get the temptation. I’ve run startups. Burn rate anxiety makes every shortcut look elegant for about 20 minutes.
But once trust becomes scarce, the game changes.
The highest-leverage assets are no longer just:
more output,
more speed,
more personalization.
They’re:
believable proof,
transparent communication,
real expertise,
and obvious human judgment.
In other words, AI can help you produce the words. It cannot automatically produce the credibility.
Trust is moving from brand issue to infrastructure issue
This is the part founders should not ignore.
The trust backlash isn’t just showing up in surveys. It’s showing up in platform behavior too.
Google said this month in its response on Search controls and publisher choice that it is developing additional controls so sites can specifically opt out of generative AI features in Search. Read that again. A company as large as Google is treating AI usage and control as a product-level trust issue.
OpenAI is taking the same tone in a different lane. In its update on testing ads in ChatGPT, the company emphasized that answers stay independent, conversations stay private from advertisers, and user control remains central.
That tells me the platforms already understand the obvious: once users stop trusting the interface, the revenue engine gets shaky fast.
What smart GTM teams should do now
I don’t think the answer is “don’t use AI.”
That would be silly.
I think the answer is to stop using AI where it is most visible and least helpful, and start using AI where it is most useful and least risky.
Here’s my rule of thumb:
Use AI heavily for:
research synthesis,
draft generation,
segmentation,
workflow automation,
CRM hygiene,
internal enablement,
and first-pass analysis.
Use human judgment heavily for:
claims,
positioning,
customer proof,
pricing communication,
category framing,
sensitive lifecycle emails,
and anything that touches trust.
If the user can feel the seams, a human should probably touch it.
My opinionated prediction
Brands that brag about how much content they can crank out with AI are going to sound like factories.
Brands that use AI behind the scenes to make humans faster, sharper, and more consistent are going to sound trustworthy.
And in the next phase of GTM, trustworthy is going to outperform prolific.
Because the internet is filling up with content.
What it’s starving for is conviction.
